Chateau de Chenonceau 24 July 2011

From Bois, we travelled to Tours, another township in the Loire Valley region.
This time our aim is to visit Chateau de Chenonceau. A castle 30mins away by train in the country.

Us at the railway station.

This place is really worth a visit if you want to experience a French castle, my first impression of the place was this is like in Disney animated movies. I suppose most Disney castles has been based on many French castles.

The place was gorgeous inside and out. The interior has been remodeled and furnished to show visitors how the castle will look as it was originally. I thought it was beautiful even though what we were seeing was not all authentically chateau originals.

This chateau was built over the River Cher in the 16th Century for Francois I, there are four levels, the kitchen being on the lowest level just above the water.
There was a lot of interesting pulleys and piping in this area, unfortunately our pamphlet does not mention what they were used for or how to operate.

Here are more photos of the inside rooms.

This is the bridge part above the river, this room was used for holding balls and parties in it's medieval history, I can imagine a summer night, with candles lovely clad people, a string quartets playing in the background. How fantastic a ball will be in this castle.

There is rowing boats for hire on the river, it looked really fun from the castle so we decided to give it a go. 6 Euro for half an hour, it was worth every bit!

We each got a turn, it wasn't too difficult or strenuous once you get used to it. The river has a a gentle current so it was terrific to row out into the middle.

A boat passed by as we were rowing, the people on board was opening champagne and having a merry time, on the spur of the moment and little encouragement from Martin, I shouted across to ask them for wine in English!
Somebody on board must have understood english or our body language as the people on board were really cheerful and said to us in French with accompanying actions to ask us to row across. I think Vincent gave his all to get us across the river to the boat as quick as possible.
We were awarded with good cheers and a cup of sparklies to share! It was fantastic and the highlight of the day!

The garden is worth a mention too, the area was squeaky clean, no stepping on the grass here!

There was also a hedge maze in another part of this hugh estate but we did not have enough time to visit.

I really enjoyed the afternoon at Chenonceau, I recommend this as a day trip in France, the history and beauty of this place will stay in my mind for a long time and if given the chance I will definitely revisit. I wonder what the chateau will look like in winter under some snow? Perhaps even more magical.
