Murano Glass - 5th Sept 2011

Something that is world renowned is Murano Glass. Murano is an island of Venice that is the main artistic glassware production location of Venice.

Venetian glass has been world renown since the renaissance when the craftsman of Venice developed a technique to improve the clarity and shapes of glassware. There is no school to teach the Murano glass craftsmanship, it is usually a family affair where techniques are passed on from one generation to the next. Therefore to learn the trade it requires long apprenticeship under a master of the craft.

We decided to travel to Murano to visit the glass factories there and to look at Murano glassware.

Our trip to the Island.

Murano in the distance.

A free demonstration by one of the glass factories showing the Maestros at work. This is a family run factory and the young man is still in apprenticeship.

Now, my blog for this day is going to be frightfully short and boring as most of the factories and shops prohibits photography.
Some of the shops really sell beautiful works of art, I liked most the sea creatures such as turtles, whales, jellyfish. The glassworks almost makes the creatures appear real and frozen in glass.

A word of caution for visitors to Murano, be wary that there are chinese glass mixed into the real Murano glass. If you are intending to buy authentic Murano glass, make sure you have the real thing. often they will have certifying sticker, or if more expensive items they will carry their own certificate. Usually cheaper and lighter glass are not authentic.
We actually spent the entire day strolling through all the shops in the central area, you can eventually develop an eye for the real or imitations. There is also a difference in craftsmanship between different stores and factories so make sure you look around first before purchasing.
Oh, and haggling is permitted for authentic Murano glass purchases so don't be afraid to ask for a special offer.

Here are some Murano scenic photos

Long story short all of us managed to make some special purchases to take home with us!

After spending money for the glassware we decided to opt for a cheaper dinner in the night. When we got back to the main island we decided on Kebabs which is the most affordable meal we have seen so far in Venice.

Then we took a long walk to the Rialto bridge for some night photos.

Gondolas in the canal, shimmering reflections of the lights of the restaurants reflecting off the river. Italian songs drifting upwards as the Gondoliers serenade the lovers in the boat.
Can't get anymore Venetian than this!

Our night ride on the no. 2 boat back to Giudecca.
